CHARACTERIZATION

Characters are the people or animals who take part in a literary work.  Characterization is the act of creating and developing a character.

Round characters               are full of personality traits, like real people.

Flat characters    --------------    are one-dimensional and only possess a single trait.  In a Shakespearean play, these characters often provide comic relief.

Dynamic characters                      are characters that change as a result of experience.

Static characters                maintain their qualities throughout the work and do not learn or grow.

Dramatic foils are characters that bring out or highlight the personality traits of another character in a play.
