CHEMISTRY

We are currently working on chapter NINE.  Please remember to read the entire chapter.  In order to be successful, you need to review the material often through your notes as well as reading the chapter.

CHAPTER NINE OUTLINE

bullet

Explain how light is given off by a gas discharge tube.

bullet

Describe the energy levels, sublevels and orbitals in the model of the atom.

bullet

Write the orbital diagrams and electron configurations for hydrogen to argon.

bullet

Write the shorthand electron configurations for the elements using the noble gases.

bullet

Write the arrangement of electrons for atoms using sublevel blocks on the periodic table.

bullet

Write the valence energy level electron configurations for the representative elements.

bullet

Use the electron configurations of the elements to explain periodic trends on the periodic table.

bullet

State the trend in atomic size, radius, ionization energies and electronegativity across a period and down a group on the periodic table.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS

bulletRead chapter nine.
bulletp. 265 #9.21,.25,.26,.27      Complete handout on electron configurations           p.270 #9.31, .33-.38
p.281 # 9.59-.64, .69 - .72                p.283 # 9.75, .77, .87, .88, .101ABDE, .102CDE, .111, .112
bulletThe above assignments are for the entire chapter.  They are written here in case you are ever absent.  The abbreviations are (SR) section review, (RC) reviewing concepts, (MR) mixed review and (P) problems.  Be sure to check with your own notes to see which homework pertains to where you left off when absent.  The rest will be gone over in class so IF YOU ARE ABSENT, be sure to have a CLASSROOM BUDDY who will show you the answers.

PLEASE CHECK THE CLASSROOM BOARD FOR THE DAILY HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS.  Since the pace of the class is decided daily based on the classes' understanding of the material, sometimes the class notes for a particular homework assignment are not gotten to. Therefore, the homework must be amended.
