Writing chemical equations using word equations

Writing word equations from chemical equations

Note: These equations are not balanced.

Translate the following sentences into word equations  and then into formula equations. Include phase labels. Then, if instructed to do so, balance the formula equations to get the chemical equations.

  1. Solid sodium reacts with chlorine gas to form solid sodium chloride

  1. Hydrogen gas reacts with oxygen gas to form liquid water

  1. Magnesium metal reacts with nitrogen gas in the air to produce magnesium nitride

  1. Aqueous ammonium chloride plus aqueous sodium hydroxide yields aqueous sodium chloride, ammonia gas and liquid water

  1. Aqueous silver nitrate reacts with potassium chloride to produce solid silver chloride plus an aqueous solution of potassium nitrate.

Translate the following formula equations into word equations. Then, write a sentence describing the chemical reaction. Add information in your sentence about the states of the reactants and products, based on YOUR knowledge.
