v Upon arriving in class, take your assigned seat. Check the homework web page for assignments due and for upcoming events. You may need to place assignments due on the "homework" table or in my computer Teach Folder; You may be instructed to complete a PSAT/SAT grammar or vocabulary exercise; You may be asked to respond to a writing prompt.
Purchase a spiral notebook with at least 3 sections to facilitate note-taking for literature, grammar, and writing. If this notebook does not have pocket folders attached, buy pocket folders to keep handouts related to these areas.
v Always come to class on time and prepared to begin work. Be sure homework assignments are complete and ready to be reviewed, discussed or collected. Any homework done as a Word Doc. to be handed in MUST be printed out BEFORE CLASS in order to receive full credit for the assignment. Printing at HOME is your best insurance, since IHA printers are often not available or not functioning. You will not be permitted to leave class in order to retrieve a printed document from the Information Commons. You may hand it in a.s.a.p., but it will be considered late.
Always bring journals, notebooks and folders to English class. Do NOT bring textbooks unless notified to do so. If you need to have either your grammar or literature book (or a paperback trade book), the request will have been posted on the homework page no later than the day before class meets. DO NOT CARRY THESE TEXTBOOKS TO ENGLISH CLASS EVERY DAY.
PLEASE NOTE: You will not be allowed to return to your locker for notebooks, books, or homework assignments once class has started.
v Your laptop should be fully charged from the night before, but be prepared to plug in if needed (you will need your charger). You may be required to take handwritten notes. Always have your English notebook and writing utensils handy.
v No food or drink (except bottled water) is allowed in the classroom. ABSOLUTELY NO GUM CHEWING or lollipops.
v Please use Locker Break and Lunch Periods to visit the bathroom. A bathroom break is allowed during class only for emergencies.
v NO CELL PHONE usage in the classroom, per IHA's cell-phone use policy. Confine calls to the cafeteria before 7:45 a.m. or during lunch period, or make necessary calls anywhere in the school after dismissal (1:55 p.m.). Please let parents know that these are the times in which you can be in touch with them or return their calls. If there is an emergency, parents are to call the school office and the school secretary will call you out of class. CELL PHONES ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE BATHROOMS! Visible use of cell phones in the hallways or in the classroom during restricted times will result in confiscation of the cell phone and a visit to Mrs. Toni Marie Hall, Dean of Stucents.
v Honesty, Courtesy, Respect, and Tolerance of ideas are expected at all times.
“Our Classroom is a Place Where…”
We don't all have to be the same.
We don't all have to think the same.
We don't all have to act the same.
We don't all have to talk the same.
We don't all have to dress the same.
We don't all have to believe the same things.
We have the right to be ourselves.
We like it that people are different.
We know that our differences
make us interesting and unique.
We honor different ways of being, acting,
and believing--even when we don't agree with them.
We do our best to solve problems peacefully.
We speak up if we see others being treated unfairly.
We treat each other the way we'd like to be treated.
We treat each other with respect.
