  8. recognize and employ rhetorical strategies.

  9. compare and contrast literary works to draw conclusions about purpose and style.

Junior Course Goals: Literature

By the end of her junior year, each IHA student will be able to:

  1. read, comprehend, interpret, and respond to various pieces of American literature.

  2. relate the themes present in American literature to the human experience in light of Catholic Christian values.

  3. understand the role of literature in various time periods; its purposes and influences, and the values it represents.

  4. trace the focus of American literature as it shifted from spiritual to intellectual to emotional to psychological.

  5. define and apply the literary terms encountered in the study of American literature.

  6. identify various forms of literary theory.

  7. appreciate the craft of American authors.

  8. recognize and employ rhetorical strategies.

  9. compare and contrast literary works to draw conclusions about purpose and style.

Proficiencies FAQ's

What are proficiencies?

Proficiency is "mastery of a specific behavior or skill demonstrated by consistently superior performance, measured against established or popular standards" (Business Dictionary.com).  In education, they are the goals set by teachers that students will accomplish by the end of a specific unit or year of study. 

How are students able to accomplish the proficiencies?

Each lesson a teacher designs focuses on one or several proficiencies, utilizing a variety of activities designed to teach students a particular skill.  Over the course of an entire unit, a teacher may cover a number of proficiencies.  Sometimes, a certain skill is stressed only a few times over the course of a unit, while in other cases, skills may be stressed on each day of the unit.  This depends upon the difficulty of the skill or the likelihood of the skill being needed in future units.  

How will knowing the proficiencies help me or my daughter?

Before a test, the most frequent question students ask is, "What's going to be on the test?"  Often, they receive the answer, "Everything that's in your notes!" or "Everything we covered in class!"  While true, these answers are not usually helpful, especially for students who may not be strong note-takers.  Knowing what the proficiencies are can help answer this question because they are essentially a list of everything the teacher expects the student to know or to be able to do.  The proficiencies are "everything we covered in class" in a nice, clear, numbered list.  When studying, students should ask themselves, "Can I. . ." and read the proficiency.  They should be able to refer to their notes for help with this if they do not already know it.  If students cannot answer one of those questions based on their notes, they know that something is missing.  Instead of having to ask a friend for "all the notes you have," students can narrow down what information they need.  In addition, students can more clearly focus their studying rather than trying to memorize everything from their notebooks or aimlessly studying for hours, hoping that they have studied the correct material.
